Smokin’ Joe’s BBQ/Quick’s on Wheels: Speed kills and Smokin’ Joe’s BBQ at 519 E Santa Fe in Olathe is a great place to get a speedy bite or great take out. Smokin’ Joe’s has excellent crispy fries and onion rings that match perfectly with their awesome BBQ sauce. They have great turkey, ribs and dinner plates. The hidden gem of Olathe always has specials and they advance past Quick’s on Wheels. Quick’s is a Kansas City legend and Earl Quicks BBQ operated for 50 years in Merriam but closed in November. Quick’s legend continues as a popular BBQ food truck run by Dustin Quick and features Burnt End & Sausage Chili, Pulled Pork Nachos and other modern BBQ items. Follow them on Twitter for their next stop.
Next Year’s Winner BBQ/Papa Poleon’s BBQ: Next Year’s Winner BBQ is located at 2306 NW Vivion Rd. They have great sides including cheesy potatoes, jalapeno cheesy corn, BBQ beans, bacon wrapped meatballs and a barbecue sundae. These guys are tournament tested and are the 2010 American Royal Pork Champions. They have great daily lunch specials and NYWBBQ leaves no doubt that they are a contender by moving past Papa Poleon’s soul food style BBQ. Papa Poleon’s has good mixed plates, great sauce and a delightful soul food finish but their Cinderella hopes are over. Papa Poleon’s is worth a visit located at 6519 Parallel Pkwy.
Pork & Pickle/Bee Cee’s Authentic: Pork & Pickle is in the Airport. Yes, Kansas City has a BBQ restaurant in the Airport, Terminal B. Important to note that you have to go thru security and otherwise have a boarding pass to access this restaurant. As result, this place is only for travelers and airport workers. BBQ turkey is a common choice. Unclear why, but their brisket sandwich has cheese. They also serve breakfast. Pork & Pickle might be the best airport eatery, but they are no match for the real world of Kansas City BBQ. Bee Cee’s dominates this match up. Bee Cee’s is located at 12560 Quivra in Overland Park in a gas station. Sound familiar? Known for being funky and friendly. Not the best fries but this place has great sauce and incredible daily lunch specials for only $7.99 that includes side and drink.
Bates City BBQ of Shawnee/Slaps: Bates City BBQ is located at 6493 Quivira in Shawnee and is a great Carolina style BBQ spot. They play country folk music in the dining room and you will like the large portions of fries, great sausage or ribs but they couldn’t get past Slaps. Slap’s BBQ is located at 553 Central in KCK. Slap’s is new and they perform well when it counts. Long lines form early for this small dive BBQ joint and the parking lot holds a max of 6 cars. Slap’s has an excellent intense sweet sauce. Killer turkey, killer beef, ribs and burnt ends. They run out of items, which lets us all know their food is fresh. Slaps is a young powerhouse and could make a championship run.

What time/ day were the votes counted? Per the current results Brobeck’s is ahead of Back Rack.
Jill says
These results weren’t based on the voting. If you see the note at the start of the article, it is based on the opinions of the KC Food Guys/crtics.
John says
Since it is based on the opinions of the KC Food guys are you saying that you have visited all 64 locations recently to form your opinion? That is a lot of BBQ!
Doug says
I discovered Brobeck’s about a year ago. I was very pleased and impressed with what they offered. I’ll have to checkout Back Rack BBQ to see if I agree with the opinions of the FoodGuys. Nevertheless this is fun to see what other think. The best bbq is like the best wine. It’s the one you like.
Kasey says
No Smokin Guns BBQ? Many would acclaim it best in KC, definitely the best in northtown! Simply put, you guys need to get out more!
Mike says
Smokin Guns is in the lower-right bracket and has made it into the sweet&spicy 16.
Mike says
I missed where ya’ll talked about the comparison between Brobeck’s and Back Rack… I figured if you’d vote to have a 5 seed lose to a 12th seed that you’d tell us your reasoning, or did I miss that somewhere?
Mike says
Smokin Guns is in the lower-right bracket and has made it into the sweet&spicy 16.
Mike says
replied to the wrong comment, and of course there’s no way to delete my mistake. Oh well.
