We all love coffee and there are plenty of places around town to get a good cup of joe. However, coffee can be beyond good and several coffee houses are crafting coffee excellence. KCFoodGuys.com is excited to launch a new series of articles that will spotlight the elite coffee houses in Kansas City.
Thou Mayest Coffee Roasters at 419 E. 18th St offers a great coffee experience. Founders Bo Nelson and Bill Holzhueter are active in the day-to-day business. Coffee can be a forum to create and Thou Mayest has developed a great space next to Grinders in our beloved Crossroads District. Unique small plants and reclaimed wood textures accent a very well done vibe that incorporates the grittiness of the CrossRoads and the super refined product served to patrons. The name “thou mayest” is a literary reference(Steinbeck) that has many interpretations but can best be described as an enthusiastic claim of personal choice.
The roasting machine is featured in the front of the store as a reminder that Thou Mayest really cares about coffee. Admittedly, this is an over-the-top hipster coffee shop that maintains focus on the coffee and not barrel laughs. In addition to coffee selections they also feature a variety of tasty baked goods from local bakery’s like rose doughnut with dried rose petals and the popular home made gourmet pop tarts. They also feature a full bar with excellent gourmet cocktails.
Thou Mayest is many things to many people and can play the role of the sleepy coffee shop in the mornings, a trendy Crossroads destination on the weekends or a lounge with flowing cocktails on weekend evenings.
Thou Mayest is always up to something and recently partnered with fellow CrossRoads all star J.Reiger and Co for a coffee liquor, “Caffe Amaro”. Previous joint efforts include an iced coffee featuring Shatto Milk Company product.
Elite coffee houses are about the product, best sampled with the simple pour over. However, Thou Mayest also feature several chilled coffee drinks and cold pours and other coffee staples that will give you reason to come back many times. The caramel latte is a popular pick.
