Gus’s Fried Chicken at 47th and Mission is located behind the original Joe’s Kansas City Barbecue at 2816 W. 47th Ave in KCK. This chicken shack is a growing chain restaurant from Tennessee and eagerly infringing on our beloved Kansas City fried chicken legends like Stroud’s and RC’s.
Gus’s Fried Chicken has an interesting location in a newly remodeled NorthWood Shopping Center. Several old-school strip malls have recently been remodeled around town and the results are impressive. A run down outdated strip mall can be reborn as a modern and welcoming mini business district with some planing and development leadership. LANE4 Property Group operates NorthWood Shopping Center and purchased the old strip mall in 2014 when it was known by the name “Fairway North Shopping Center”. The 47th street area is a growing food district and a rising dinning destination anchored by several complimentary restaurants like Joe’s and Taco Republic.
The decor of Gus’s is distinctly southern with checkerboard table cloths, fried green tomatoes and paper plates. Gus’s features Coke products and IBC Rootbeer and gallons of sweet Southern tea.
This fried chicken is very good with excellent crust that is perfectly cooked. We devoured our chicken and left nothing but a pile of bones. Fried chicken will forever be a hand food and dining techniques get medieval as we picked the bones clean of juicy white meat and salty crispy crust. Gus’s bird is heavily seasoned and a spicy bite. Oddly spicy for a chain restaurant. The menu features several multiple piece combo’s including the three piece with two breasts and a wing for $10.95 or the 2 piece for $7.95. Multi piece plates include basic beans and fresh slaw. Other Southern notable side items include greens and fried okra. Gus’s chicken is excellent and they have a rightful position in the Kansas City fried chicken pecking order.
The desert at Gus’s is worth the trip and was a great surprise. Pie options include pecan pie, chocolate chess pie, sweet potato pie and cocanut. I had always wanted to try a chess pie so this was a great trip. Chess pie is a Southern pantry pie that is wonderfully simple. The Chess pie was unique and wonderfully mild and a perfect
sweet treat after the fried salty meal. The pecan pie was also great and both pies tasted home made. Gus’s also features old fashion root beer floats, including an alcoholic variation. Make sure to consider Gus’s as a surprising dessert or sweet tooth destination.
Gus’s has great spicy fried chicken and many southern side favorites. This is an affordable restaurant with an excellent southern dessert menu. Try Gus’s chicken for a great fried bird.
