Located at 208 North Main Street Main Street of the historic Independence square, Heinz and Rosie Heinzelmann’s Rhineland restaurant makes good on traditional German cuisine for more than 25 years.
Some of Rhineland’s German cooking staples for you to try include Bratwurst, a type of German sausage made from veal, beef, or most commonly pork. Knackwurst, a sausage made from all beef and flavored with garlic and Schnitzel which in normally a pork or veal cutlet thinned by pounding with a meat tenderizer, coated with flour, beaten eggs and bread crumbs.
On a cold November day I tried the JagersSchnitzel “Hunters Schnitzel” for lunch while have the lucky opportunity to serve as a juror at the Jackson County courthouse nearby. The warmth brings you in from the start, both from the people waiting on you and the furnishings.
German music quietly playing in the background of a family friendly layout of tables and chairs. The tin ceiling and lamps giving a rustic homey charm. Let’s be clear, this is authentic German family dining not Gordon Biersch.
The “Hunter’s Schnitzel” I had was the pork version with brown gravy mushroom sauce and a side known spätzle as with two dinner rolls. The rich sauce complements the lightly breaded pork cutlet very well and will warm you up.
You will notice the side called spätzle. It looks a lot like fried dough and that’s the taste you will get from these German style dumplings. They are light and flavorful.
Some of the other sides you can choose from are such goodies as German Sauerkraut, Cucumber Salad, Hot or Cold German Potato Salad or Red Cabbage.
If you aren’t full there’s plenty of deserts to choose from including warm bread pudding, apple strudel or seasonal fruit pies along with Black Forest cake.
There’s a solid German draft beers to choose from and you can even get them in the Mass, pronounce ‘maas’ which is the standard beer size served during Oktoberfest at the Hofbräuhaus in Munich. If you are really thirsty drink from the glass boot and get a t-shirt!
Rhineland welcomes you with a cozy atmosphere centered on and terrific cooking and a staff that makes you feel welcome and part of the family.
The family and I will be back again soon. The prices are right for the quality and amount of food you get. For more information visit their site at http://rheinlandrestaurant.com.
