Going out for breakfast with family or friends is certainly one of life’s wonderful pleasures. Often the backdrop for many family events like Father’s Day or the informal meeting place before a road trip, breakfast is easy and cheap, but that doesn’t stop people from disagreeing on the best morning meal. Some like the greasy spoon dinners (IHOP, Waffle House), the contemporary morning gatherings (Corner Cafe, Cracker Barrel), or Kansas City’s growing gourmet of breakfast brunches (Farmhouse, Room 39). Even so, the full-blown breakfast debate should be saved for some other time because we need to induct Ginger Sue’s to the breakfast hall of fame.
Ginger Sue’s is a locally-owned, family breakfast and lunch cafe. Ginger Sue’s has three locations in Lee’s Summit, Olathe, and the original location in downtown Liberty. The locations have a young staff, great coffee, and excellent breakfast. The Liberty location is a wonderful rustic location in historic Liberty Square, and the other locations are in new-construction strip mall suburban storefronts. The menu is limited to breakfast and lunch, and the restaurant is open daily from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Ginger Sue’s has great food. You absolutely cannot skip their wonderful breakfast potato side dish. These spuds are crispy, heavily seasoned, and boast a very unique texture. The big, savory cubes are crispy along the entire surface, but warm and smooth on the inside.
They have a great selection of omelets, including the West Coast Omelette with bacon, sliced avocado and shredded cheddar-jack cheese, topped with salsa and sour cream. I was also pleasantly surprised by the Aloha Awakea Omelette with pineapple, ham and shredded cheddar-jack cheese topped with toasted coconut. I know that pineapple and eggs sounds like an odd flavor combination but it is a very well-balanced omelette and the exotic ingredients were muted.
Ginger Sue’s has the best pancakes in Kansas City. These cakes are 7 inches wide, 1 inch thick, and blonde brown. The remarkable attribute of these pancakes is the delicious outer skin that is a wonderfully chewy complement to the traditional fluffy pancake core. I don’t care how hard you try, I know there is no way that anyone can make pancakes like this at home. Ginger Sue’s pancake options include, Plain, Apple, Cinnamon, Blueberry with Berry Compote, and Banana topped with Peanut Butter and Chocolate Chips.
Going out for breakfast ensures a good morning, but pancakes from Ginger Sue’s are guaranteed to make breakfast great.
