Bonito Michoacan is an authentic central Mexico lunch spot for those seeking a KCK playdate and adventure over the lunch hour. This place is amazing for many reasons and offers intoxicatingly simple traditional creations. The street tacos are world class good and a secret treasure of Kansas City. A wide taco selection includes Barbocao, Carnitas, Pastor, Asada and many more traditional versions. The crown jewel is the salsa bar. The salsa bar has 10 taco toppings. Each topping widely different than the next and a visual spectacle of vibrant colors. The ingredients are so fresh that the flavors of the salsa’s change as the ingredients go in and out of season. Pickeled onions, tomatillo sauce, pico de gallo and many many more fresh toppings. I have been to this place many times and exploring the tastes of these taco toppings is a personal favorite KC dining experience. Bonito Michoacan is also affordable, especially on Tuesday with $1 tacos. You can have lunch for $8 and that includes a drink.
Disclaimer, this is traditional Mexican. There isn’t chips and salsa or nacho cheese sauce. Those that don’t appreciate the difference between tasteless Rancho-Bravo-Grande-Hombres slop buck strip mall Mexican mush and authentic central Mexican dishes are likely in for a big surprise. Bonito Michoacan is a refreshing reminder of what food is actually supposed to taste like.
Stop by the Mexican Bakery across the street for a sweet treat before you head back the office. The bakery offers a wide variety of traditional Mexican baked goods.
